Statins Associated with Risk of Diabetes

Wed, 11 Jan 2012
Postmenopausal women who take statins are more at risk of developing diabetes than women who are not taking statins.

A big American Women’s Health Initiative warns that a great deal of research needs to be done.

Seven per cent of the 153,840 postmenopausal women on recruitment for the WHI stated that they were taking statins.

A million people on, 10,242 women stated that they had developed diabetes mellitus.

Women who take statins at baseline became more significantly likely to develop than women not taking statins.

After adjustment for possible confounders, such as, age, ethnic origin and body mass index, the increase in the risk of developing diabetes with statin use has remained significant.

As statins benefit vascular mortality and morbidity in diabetic populations it is recommended that use in primary and secondary prevention should not change.
